SOUNDS FROM THE UNITED STATES
A growing collection of music from the United States, highlighting recent releases, experimental gems, and standout records.
Every now and then you stumble across a voice with such power, such conviction in its storytelling, yet such effortlessness too. It’s a magic combination, and one that Lael Neale possesses in spades. ‘Wild Waters’ is the leading track on her fourth LP Altogether Stranger and is a particularly catchy track that has been on repeat since its release. The entire record glistens with reverb soaked psych-folk songs that truly stick. Some lean into more upbeat, hypnotic rhythms, whilst others are more stripped back and let her poetic vocals do all of the talking. We adore Lael Neale.

Chicago outfit Horsegirl create charming rock music built on jangly guitars, playful vocals and clever tempo shifts. Their sophomore LP Phonetics On and On was produced by Cate Le Bon and saw them explore a more reflective sound. Slightly more downbeat than their debut, there’s a vulnerability that shines through in each track. One standout track that seems to sound even better on repeat is ‘2468’—effortlessly nailing a masterful tempo shift that keeps the listener leaning in with curiosity. The album goes in pleasantly unexpected directions, yet always feels entirely considered.
Label: Matador (New York CIty).
